POS Machine Price in UAE (2026): What a Card Machine Really Costs

Search for POS machine prices in the UAE and you will find quotes ranging from free to over AED 8,500. Both are accurate. They are describing two completely different products that unfortunately share a name, and almost every page ranking for this term blurs them together.

Short answer: a card payment terminal from an acquirer typically costs AED 150 to AED 500 per month to rent, around AED 800 to AED 2,500 to buy outright, or nothing at all on qualifying accounts. A full EPOS till system with a touchscreen, software and peripherals runs AED 1,000 to AED 8,500. Whichever you choose, the hardware is almost never the number that matters β€” transaction fees of 1.5% to 3% will cost you far more.

The two things called a POS machine

Clearing this up first will save you from comparing quotes that were never comparable.

A card payment terminal is the handheld device a customer taps or inserts a card into. It connects to a merchant acquirer who moves the money into your bank account. You get this from a payments company or a bank, and you cannot simply buy one off a shelf and start using it β€” it has to be linked to a merchant account in your business's name.

An EPOS or till system is the touchscreen on your counter that rings up items, tracks stock, prints receipts and manages staff logins. You buy this from an IT or retail systems supplier. On its own it cannot take a card payment at all.

Plenty of businesses need both. Many modern Android terminals now combine the two in one device. But when you are comparing prices, you have to know which one a quote refers to.

Card payment terminal costs

There are three models in the UAE market.

Free on qualifying accounts

Several providers, including us, will supply the terminal at no hardware cost if your expected card turnover justifies it. The cost does not disappear β€” it is recovered through your transaction rate or a minimum monthly commitment. That can still be the cheapest total option, but only if you compare the full monthly cost rather than treating free hardware as a win on its own.

Monthly rental

Rental is quoted rather than published, and reported figures vary widely β€” we have seen everything from under AED 200 to several hundred dirhams a month depending on the device, your volume and your account profile. Treat any number you read online as indicative only and get your own quote in writing. Rental preserves cash flow and usually bundles support and replacement. Over a three-year term it is almost always more expensive than buying, and it typically comes with a contract that is awkward to exit early.

One-off purchase

Buying a payment terminal outright is an option with most providers, though almost none publish the price β€” you will be quoted it alongside your rate. Owning the hardware removes a recurring line item and makes switching acquirer easier later, though you take on the replacement risk yourself. Ask for the purchase price and the rental rate side by side, because the trade-off between them is where the real money sits.

EPOS till system costs

This is where the higher numbers come from. UAE suppliers list touchscreen POS terminals across a wide band depending on specification.

TypeTypical UAE priceSuits
Android handheld / mobile POSAED 675 – 1,900Market stalls, delivery, events, pop-ups
Entry all-in-one touchscreenAED 2,000 – 3,000Small cafes, salons, single-counter retail
Mid-range touchscreen terminalAED 3,000 – 4,500Busy restaurants, multi-till retail
Premium branded systemsAED 5,000 – 8,500+High-volume, multi-outlet operations

Add peripherals on top: receipt printers, cash drawers, barcode scanners and kitchen display units each add a few hundred dirhams. Software licences are often billed separately, monthly, per till.

Why hardware is the smallest number

Here is the part most price guides skip. Work through a realistic example.

A Dubai cafe turns over AED 80,000 a month on cards, with an average transaction of AED 35. That is roughly 2,285 card payments monthly.

CostAt 2.9% + AED 1At 2.2% + AED 1
Percentage feeAED 2,320AED 1,760
Fixed feesAED 2,285AED 2,285
Monthly totalAED 4,605AED 4,045
Terminal rentalAED 250AED 250

Two things should jump out.

First, a 0.7 percentage point difference in rate saves AED 560 a month β€” AED 6,720 a year. That dwarfs any hardware decision. Spending three days negotiating your rate is worth vastly more than three weeks choosing a terminal.

Second, look at the fixed fee column. On a AED 35 average basket, the AED 1 per transaction is costing nearly as much as the percentage. If your average sale is small, the fixed fee is your real enemy and you should optimise that before the headline rate. A business with a AED 300 average basket has the opposite problem and should push hard on the percentage instead.

The number to ask for is your blended effective rate: total monthly fees divided by total card turnover. In the example above that is 5.76% at the first rate β€” double the advertised 2.9%. Any provider unwilling to model this on your actual numbers is hiding something.

What to budget by business type

BusinessSetup budgetWhat you need
Home business, events, deliveryAED 0 – 900Mobile terminal or SoftPOS on a phone
Salon, clinic, small shopAED 0 – 2,500One countertop terminal, free or rented
Cafe or restaurantAED 2,500 – 6,000EPOS till plus one or two terminals
Multi-outlet retailAED 8,000+Integrated EPOS and terminals per till

Costs that will not be in your quote

  • Setup fee β€” anywhere from zero to AED 2,000 depending on provider and integration
  • Minimum monthly charge β€” a floor you pay even in a quiet month, which catches seasonal businesses badly
  • Chargeback fee β€” typically AED 50 to 150 per dispute, win or lose
  • International card surcharge β€” foreign-issued cards often cost a full percentage point more, which matters enormously in tourist areas
  • Early termination fee β€” three-year terminal contracts are common; ask what leaving in year one costs
  • Paper rolls β€” trivial individually, but a busy outlet gets through them steadily

Four questions before you sign

  1. What is my blended effective rate on my actual monthly volume? Not the headline percentage.
  2. What is the contract length and the cost of leaving early? Ask before discussing rates, not after.
  3. When does money reach my account? T+1 and T+3 are very different for cash flow.
  4. What do international and premium cards cost? If a meaningful share of your customers are tourists, this changes your real rate substantially.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a POS machine cost in the UAE?

A card payment terminal costs AED 150 to AED 500 per month to rent or roughly AED 800 to AED 2,500 to buy, and is free on qualifying accounts with some providers. A full EPOS till system costs AED 1,000 to AED 8,500 depending on specification.

Can I get a free POS machine in Dubai?

Yes, on qualifying accounts. The hardware cost is recovered through your transaction rate or a minimum monthly commitment, so compare total monthly cost rather than the hardware price alone.

Is it better to rent or buy a card machine?

Buying is usually cheaper over a three-year horizon and makes switching provider easier. Renting preserves cash flow and bundles support and replacement. If you expect to renegotiate or switch within two years, owning your hardware gives you more leverage.

What is the transaction fee on a POS machine in the UAE?

Merchant discount rates generally fall between 1.5% and 3% for Visa and Mastercard, plus a fixed fee of around AED 1 per transaction. Only one major UAE provider publishes a standard rate; the rest quote individually based on your volume and industry.

What documents do I need to get a POS machine in the UAE?

Normally a valid trade licence plus passport, visa and Emirates ID for the owners or partners, and your company bank account details. Incomplete documents are the single most common cause of delay. Approval usually takes 7 to 10 working days.

Do I need an EPOS system as well as a card terminal?

Not necessarily. A small shop or salon can run on a card terminal alone. You need an EPOS system when you want stock control, itemised sales reporting, table or order management, or staff accountability.
